Building materials and furniture expo flexes green muscle

:::
At the 2012 Taipei International Building Materials and Furniture Show, Premier Sean Chen today said the industry has taken on noticeably more green energy and eco-friendly concepts over the years. Taking traditional industries and developing new specialties is one of the objectives of the Executive Yuan's Economic Power-Up Plan launched in September. Chen also said the exhibit contents were entertaining, educational and enriching.

Recalling a visit to a furniture factory last February, the premier said local small and medium-sized manufacturers are using nontoxic latex, which not only makes furniture greener and safer but attracts more customers looking for eco-conscientious products. This is a prime example of the gains of cultivating a traditional industry's unique characteristics, he said.

Premier Chen also referred to the idea of preselling homes, an unusual practice that has been in Taiwan for 40 years. These units have enjoyed brisk sales thanks mainly to model houses, where sellers use building materials and furniture to design and show attractive living spaces to potential buyers. Building materials, interior design and furniture are therefore key elements in the success of presale homes in Taiwan.

After his opening address, the premier toured exhibits of green building materials, roof and wall landscaping, and kitchen furniture.
