The Executive Yuan on Thursday approved draft amendments to the Education Act for Indigenous Peoples to help establish a comprehensive education system for indigenous groups.
Premier Su Tseng-chang said at the Cabinet's weekly meeting that this round of revisions is extremely important for cultivating and developing indigenous talent as it will safeguard their education rights with a wider range of support and comprehensive resources.
Proposed by the Ministry of Education (MOE), the amendments align with President Tsai Ing-wen's policy for a comprehensive indigenous education system, and meet public expectations for enabling greater participation of indigenous peoples in their education.
The MOE said the Education Act for Indigenous Peoples has undergone four rounds of amendments since its promulgation on June 17, 1998, three of which consisted of smaller revisions. Today's draft amendments will mark the act's first overhaul in nearly 15 years since the last major revision on September 1, 2004.
The draft amendments will now be forwarded to the Legislature for review.
