Premier: Transitional justice legislation marks milestone

:::

At today's Cabinet meeting, Premier Lai Ching-te said the transitional justice act passed by the Legislature Tuesday marks a new milestone in Taiwan's democracy and carries deep significance for freedom and democratic values. Beyond fulfilling a government pledge to the people of Taiwan, the act represents one of the most important pieces of reform legislation demanded by the public.

Now that the act has become law, the work of transitional justice will enter a new phase, the premier said. Pursuant to the act, the Executive Yuan will establish a transitional justice promotion committee as an independent government agency responsible for declassifying political documents, removing symbols from Taiwan's authoritarian era, redressing judicial injustices and restoring historical truths. All of these efforts are intended to fulfill the people's expectations for achieving transitional justice, reconciliation and unity.
