Speaking at a banquet in honor of the return of Taiwan's delegation from the 30th Summer Universiade, hosted this year by the Italian city of Naples, Premier Su Tseng-chang on Wednesday thanked the athletes for their excellent performance at the games, where they captured nine gold, 13 silver and 10 bronze medals, setting a new record for gold-medal performances at a summer universiade hosted abroad. The premier praised the delegation for their historic victories and winning honor for their homeland on the world stage, and offered his hopes and encouragement for the star athletes to continue working hard to accomplish even greater feats for Taiwan at the 2020 Summer Olympics to be held in Tokyo.
The Ministry of Education indicated that the Taiwan delegation to this year's summer universiade competed in 13 sports categories, bringing home a total of 32 medals and placing Taiwan seventh among the 118 competing nations. Among the country's medalists are gymnast Lee Chih-kai, who won a second consecutive universiade gold on the pommel horse, while Tang Chia-hung won Taiwan's first-ever summer universiade gold medal on the horizontal bar. These historic individual victories also helped the men's gymnastics team claim Taiwan's first silver for overall team performance.
