At the Cabinet's weekly meeting Thursday, Premier Cho Jung-tai received a National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) briefing on the development of the Trustworthy AI Dialogue Engine (TAIDE) which utilizes generative AI. Premier Cho said that construction of TAIDE's large language model (LLM), designed specifically for Taiwan, is a crucial step toward fulfilling President Lai Ching-te's vision of promoting the nation as an "AI island." The premier said Taiwan plays an indispensable role in global supply chains between democratic nations, and in order to maintain that key strategic position, the nation must keep abreast of current trends in artificial intelligence development, and ramp up investment in AI infrastructure and talent training.
In April 2023, the NSTC initiated a research and development project to build Taiwan's version of a generative AI chatbot. Based on Taiwanese culture and incorporating Taiwan-specific elements including language, values and customs, the project team behind TAIDE has built a generative AI engine with a foundation model that has trustworthiness at its core, and their achievements are deserving of praise, the premier said.
Premier Cho asked the NSTC to continue to refine AI technology and applications, and to work with the relevant ministries and agencies to help accelerate the introduction of value-added applications into industries to increase business productivity, as well as into government and across public services to provide a greater range of convenient services for the public and improve administrative efficiency.
