Premier gives pep talk to Olympic athletes

:::

During a visit to the National Sports Training Center (NSTC) in Kaohsiung's Zuoying District on June 22, Premier Sean Chen wished Taiwan's athletes and coaches success at the 2012 Olympic Games, which will start July 27 in London.

Chen noted that 45 ROC athletes have qualified for the competition, and the sports in which the country competes have grown increasingly diverse. He said this is both the fruit of the athletes' efforts and a sign that the nation's competitive hopes are running deeper and deeper.

The premier encouraged athletes and coaches to strive together. "I was profoundly moved by how hard you push yourself in training," he told the athletes. "Have the confidence and courage to compete for medals!"

"Since all-digital TV broadcasting is set to start nationwide July 1, all citizens will be able to see your splendid performances clearly," he added.

After being briefed on the NSTC's facilities and training programs, Premier Chen visited the cafeteria, which provides individualized diets based on athletes' different body types and the demands of their sports. The premier provided NT$100,000 (US$3,338) in bonus funding for the athletes' meals to help them better prepare for the games.

Chen said that since the third stage of the Olympic training program arranged by the Sports Affairs Council began March 1, the NSTC has placed special emphasis on health care so athletes will not suffer any injuries in the run-up to the Games. It has also provided tutoring so that the nation's representatives can continue their studies while training for the competition.
