'888' health program tackles leading chronic health conditions

:::

At Thursday's weekly Cabinet meeting, Premier Cho Jung-tai was briefed by the Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) on the 888 Program to tackle the "three highs" (high blood pressure, high blood sugar and high cholesterol) and advance President Lai Ching-te's "Healthy Taiwan" policy vision. Launched in 2024 by the MOHW, the 888 Program aims to enroll 80% of individuals affected by the three highs in Taiwan's care network by 2030, while ensuring that 80% of those enrolled receive lifestyle counseling and 80% achieve effective management of their conditions.

Chronic illnesses linked to high blood pressure, high blood sugar and high cholesterol are the primary threats to the health of the Taiwanese public, the premier said. The program therefore aims to cut the standardized mortality rate associated with these conditions by one-third by 2030. Through a preventive medicine approach, addressing root risk factors and improving lifestyle habits, the program will help empower people to manage their own health and protect overall public well-being.
