Delta Electronics, Inc.'s collaboration with government initiatives and commitment to social responsibility make it a model business, Premier Jiang Yi-huah said today while visiting the company in Taoyuan County.
The premier was briefed on the firm's development and operating philosophy by a delegation headed by its founder and honorary chairman, Bruce C.H. Cheng.
In coordination with the Ministry of Economic Affairs' Dawning Green Energy Industry Program and Branding Taiwan Campaign, Delta has been conducting research and development (R&D) on green-energy innovations and building an international brand name, respectively, Jiang pointed out. "These projects are critical to making Delta globally competitive," he said.
Taiwan's past economic development was largely based on contract manufacturing and component production for foreign firms, but successful industrial transformation requires enhancing R&D capabilities and establishing a global brand name, the premier stated. He affirmed Delta's successful metamorphosis, noting it has already built a global brand name for itself, and urged other enterprises to courageously follow in its footsteps.
"The government will absolutely extend a hand to businesses undergoing the transformation process, whether it is in R&D, innovation or any related field that needs an injection of resources," he said.
"Delta has responded to the government's promotion of intelligent green building, employing smart energy-saving solutions to construct a sustainable work environment," the premier pointed out. The energy conversion efficiency of the company's electronics R&D now tops 90 percent, while its smart green buildings have achieved an electricity conservation rate of 53 percent and water conservation rate of 75 percent. "Delta's success in green-energy innovation proves that a nation's economic development and environmental protection can go hand-in-hand," Jiang stated.
The premier further indicated that Delta has not left its social responsibilities by the wayside while developing its business. "For example, following Typhoon Morakot the company donated several green buildings to schools in remote areas so that future generations will learn from an early age how to protect the Earth and treasure an eco-friendly environment," he pointed out.
Moreover, the company's employee benefits are among the nation's best, and its ratio of worker remuneration (salaries and bonuses) to annual revenue is more generous than the electronics industry average, he said.
"If the fruits of economic development cannot be shared among all citizens, then this society is neither fair nor just even when high economic growth is achieved," Jiang remarked, noting that raising workers' salaries and creating more employment opportunities are the core topics of his recent talks with Cabinet members.
"If increases in salaries and jobs are not in sight, all efforts are in vain even if we achieve the highest growth rate in the world," he concluded.
