At the Cabinet's weekly meeting on Thursday, Premier Chen Chien-jen received a briefing from the Central Election Commission (CEC) on the 16th presidential and 11th legislative elections. The premier said that polls closed on January 13, 2024 and the entire process from the casting of votes to the counting of ballots proceeded peacefully and smoothly, earning a high level of acclaim both at home and abroad, and demonstrating that Taiwan has matured into a model democracy within the Asia region.
The premier thanked colleagues from ministries, agencies and local governments for their unified efforts in fulfilling election-related tasks, and thanked all Taiwanese for cherishing and upholding the nation's democracy. During this election cycle, many interested parties both foreign and domestic emerged online, deliberately fabricating and disseminating election mis- and disinformation in attempts to interfere with election affairs and popular opinion. Fortunately, countermeasures were swiftly deployed in each case, thereby reducing the spread of false information. The premier directed the CEC to continue its close monitoring of mis- and disinformation in the election's aftermath, and to strengthen the handling of clarifications, reporting, and transferring of cases to prosecutorial, police and investigatory authorities.
