Premier urges energy conservation as summer approaches

:::
With Dragon Boat Festival (June 2) marking the start of the peak season for electricity consumption, Premier Jiang Yi-huah today directed the Ministry of Economic Affairs to draw up innovative methods of encouraging energy conservation among the public, and to report back in one week. The premier also asked Vice Premier Mao Chi-kuo to consult with related agencies and to coordinate measures that control electricity use from the demand side.

Taiwan's natural resources are limited, which is why the government has been keen to offer a raft of incentives and subsidies that promote energy conservation and carbon reduction, Jiang said. Some of the most popular measures include reducing electricity bills to reward low users, holding electricity conservation competitions among local governments, promoting energy efficiency labels to help consumers make smarter choices, and offering subsidies on efficient appliances.

To encourage the public to save energy, the government should lead by example, Jiang said. He asked all ministers to begin wearing summer attire next week—except for special events such as inauguration ceremonies, international conferences and banquets, or Legislature interpellation sessions where formal attire is required. On other occasions, the ministers should avoid suits and ties and opt for light, comfortable and convenient clothing instead.
