Record success at 19th Asian Games reflects higher funding of sports

:::

At the Cabinet's weekly meeting Thursday, Premier Chen Chien-jen received a Ministry of Education (MOE) report regarding Taiwan's achievements at the 19th Asian Games and the government's allocation of resources into sports. The premier said Taiwan's team performed brilliantly at this year's Asian Games, demonstrating that the government's policy of greatly increasing its sports budget in recent years has already proven effective.

The premier said Taiwan's team won a total of 67 medals this year: 19 gold, 20 silver and 28 bronze. This not only surpasses Taiwan's results at the previous Games, but also ties with Taiwan's highest gold medal count ever at the 1998 Asian Games. Among all 45 participating countries and regions, Taiwan ranked sixth in gold medals. For many events, Taiwan's team either won its first gold medal or first medal ever, or maintained its outstanding performance from previous years.

The premier emphasized that the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics take place next year and instructed the MOE to continue cultivating gold medal challengers by implementing Golden Plan 2.0, an upgraded plan that provides specialist selection, training, competition and guidance ahead of Taiwanese athletes' participation at Paris 2024.
