Taiwan's central region is the heart of the country's precision machinery and other traditional manufacturing industries, and also serves as a vital hub connecting the technology corridor that spans western Taiwan. To further enhance the central region's industrial competitiveness and realize the goal of balanced national development, the government has introduced a plan to promote new core industries in central Taiwan that ride on the strength of smart and precision technologies. Under the plan, Taichung will become a major center for smart manufacturing and precision machinery; Changhua will develop industrial clusters specializing in metal products and automotive components; Nantou's agricultural sector will adopt smart technologies and promote premium agriculture; and Yunlin will strengthen value chains for smart aquaculture.
Key strategies
■ Advance the digital and low-carbon transformation of core industries:
Expand digital transformation by introducing smart technologies such as generative AI in precision machinery industries. Propel innovative development and green transformation in metal products industries through the adoption of AI and deep energy saving. Create green supply chains for automotive components and advance the development of smart vehicles.
■ Reinvent existing development hubs into four new core industries:
Optics industry: Foster innovation in optoelectronic technologies, leverage key technologies and accelerate silicon photonics design and module development.
Semiconductor industry: Cultivate cutting-edge chip clusters, centered around Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). Develop a high-end memory supply chain, centered around Micron Technology.
Drone industry: Build a non-red supply chain, centered around Aerospace Industrial Development Corporation.
Smart agriculture: Accelerate the widespread adoption of smart agriculture services and promote high value-added premium agriculture.
■ Collaborate with legal entities to drive industrial innovation:
Leverage legal entity resources to create AI pilot production lines, facilitate the integration of AI technology into industries, establish an AI-powered center for mold technology, and foster AI talent development, thereby accelerating industrial R&D and strengthening prototyping capabilities.
