Promoting organic agriculture

:::

Promoting organic agriculture helps create an ecosystem that protects the environment and public health, while also encouraging the sustainable development of Taiwan's agricultural sector and serving as a key strategy for the nation's transition toward net-zero carbon emissions. In August 2024, the Executive Yuan, responding to the growing public awareness of health issues and environmental sustainability in recent years, passed a plan to promote organic agriculture from 2024 through 2027. The plan provides a guiding framework for fostering the development of organic agriculture in Taiwan, offering systematic and long‑term support to help advance this field and steer Taiwan toward a bright future for sustainable agriculture.

Areas of focus

To ensure the well-rounded development of organic agriculture across multiple areas, the plan sets nine key performance indicators: (1) total production area for organic agriculture, (2) market growth rate of organic agricultural products, (3) annual growth rate of organic agricultural exports, (4) increase in the range and management area of forest by‑products from the under-forest economy, (5) promotion and upgrading of animal-friendly and organic livestock farming systems, (6) increase in the number of certified product categories and the certified area for organic aquaculture, (7) establishment of quantitative valuation indicators for ecosystem services in organic agriculture, (8) reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and (9) increase in internet traffic to organic agriculture-related platforms.
