Developing next-generation communications technology

:::

The "next-generation communications industry" refers to the emerging communications technology industry that encompasses wireless communication networks spanning land, sea and air. This technology is vital for advancing the digital economy and enabling smart living. Its development can drive the upgrading and transformation of related sectors, bolster Taiwan's technological innovation capabilities and industrial competitiveness, and contribute to deepening international cooperation, thereby reinforcing Taiwan's key position in the global supply chain.

Between 2025 and 2030, the government is allocating around NT$27 billion (approximately US$916.7 million) toward a plan to develop next-generation communications technology. The plan leverages Taiwan's strong foundation in sectors such as semiconductors, integrated circuit (IC) design and communication modules. It aims to enhance the existing advantages and future competitiveness of the nation's communications industry, seize opportunities in the commercial development of future 6G technology, and position Taiwan as a trusted and indispensable partner in the global democratic community. Moreover, the plan supports President Lai Ching-te's policy visions of promoting next-generation communications as one of the Five Trusted Industry Sectors, setting Taiwan's sights on the space industry and further developing its strengths as a maritime nation.

Key strategies

Deploy critical application services: Support the integration of communications technology with various industry applications to enable services in fields such as telemedicine, smart transportation and maritime communications. Expand access to new communications technology and reduce the digital divide.

Build experimental networks and accelerate technology R&D and trials: Accelerate commercialization of Taiwan's communications products and bolster companies' R&D capabilities by establishing satellite ground equipment test networks, 6G simulation networks and other testing and verification platforms.

Enhance cross-sector collaborations within the industry ecosystem: Assist businesses in aligning with service provider specifications and international standards. Build an end-to-end supply chain from R&D to market, spanning communications chips, radio frequency (RF) modules, terminal equipment and system integration.
