The Executive Yuan on Thursday approved a draft revision to Article 95 of the Electricity Act formulated by the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA). The draft amendment will now go to the Legislature for review and voting.

Premier Lai Ching-te said that the Central Election Commission has certified the passage of Proposition 16 following a recent national referendum. The proposition calls for the repeal of the Electricity Act’s Article 95 Paragraph 1, which dictates that all nuclear power generation in Taiwan must cease by 2025. In accordance with provisions of the Referendum Act, that section of the electricity law was abolished as of December 2 of this year.

The Executive Yuan respects the result of the referendum and so directed the MOEA to draft the necessary revision. The premier emphasized, however, that Proposition 16’s passage does not change the goal of transforming Taiwan into a nuclear-free homeland, but rather eliminates a specific deadline for achieving that objective.
