Premier Su Tseng-chang on Tuesday announced an investment of NT$500 million (US$16.2 million) in the second phase of construction for the second desalination plant in Penghu County’s capital of Magong City.

The premier made the announcement in Penghu while inspecting outlying area water supply improvement projects under the Forward-looking Infrastructure Development Program. With over a million tourists flocking to Penghu each year for its natural and cultural attractions, the archipelago’s limited water resources must be used in an optimal manner, he said.

The plant is currently in the first phase of construction and is expected to provide a daily water processing capacity of 4,000 metric tons when completed in late-June this year. The second phase, with a target completion date of 2022, will provide a capacity of 6,000 metric tons to further ensure reliable access to freshwater supplies for the Penghu area.

As for Penghu’s maritime transportation problems, the government will also support the construction of a new vessel to replace the aging Taihwa Ferry, the premier said. The new ferry will ensure navigation safety while promoting tourism development.
