The Executive Yuan on Thursday approved a bill drafted by the National Development Council (NDC) aimed at releasing documents on past political events. The draft bill will now go to the Legislative Yuan for review and debate.

Premier Lai Ching-te said that achieving transitional justice is a key policy for President Tsai Ing-wen, and one of the core tasks of this mission is to plan out and promote the release of files and other materials concerning past political events and developments. By unsealing historical records and revealing historical truths, the government hopes to advance social reconciliation. Together with the complementary Act on Promoting Transitional Justice, this legislation is crucial to the effort to open and make available for use such material.

The NDC was instructed to take the initiative in communicating with the ruling and opposition parties in order to secure a quick and successful conclusion of the legislative process. Premier Lai also directed all ministries and agencies to devote appropriate resources to thoroughly searching out and collecting relevant material so that custody may be transferred to the National Archives Administration as quickly as possible.
