Japanese cyclist wins first stage of Tour de Taiwan

Taipei, March 11 (CNA) Japanese road racing cyclist Hayato Okamoto won the first stage of the Tour de Taiwan 2018 on Sunday, finishing as the leading Asian rider as well as first in the individual and points categories, making him the first cyclist to lead all four categories.The first leg of the Tour de Taiwan, a class 2.1 event on the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) Asian Tour calendar 2018, started in Taipei City Sunday, attracting nearly 200 elite professional cyclists from 19 domestic and foreign teams.Okamoto won the Taipei leg by finishing the 82.3km race in a time of 1 hour, 48 minutes and 55 seconds. He also received the yellow jersey, which indicates the overall leader, the blue jersey, which denotes the leading Asian athlete and the green jersey, which is awarded to the cyclist with most points.The 22-year-old cyclist said this is his first time at the Tour de Taiwan and he is excited with his performance in the first stage.Okamoto won the 2017 U23 Asian Cycling Championships and finished first in the second stage of the Tour de Hokkaido for which he received the yellow jersey.The second leg of the Tour de Taiwan 2018 will take place in Taoyuan Monday, and the third to fifth stages will be held in Hsinchu, Nantou and Pingtung from Tuesday to Thursday, respectively.
