Taiwan wins top prizes at international piano contest in New York

New York, Dec. 3 (CNA) Two Taiwan pianists won gold and silver at an international piano competition for people with disabilities in New York on Monday.Lee Shang-hsuan, born in 1988 and diagnosed with autism at the age of three, received a gold prize at the fourth annual international piano competition for people with disabilities, held from Dec. 1-3 in the Big Apple.Lee was one of eight Taiwan pianists who took part in the event, along with 27 competitors from 15 other countries, including Japan, Germany, Italy, Egypt, the United Kingdom, Indonesia, Mexico, Nepal, Poland, Romania, Singapore, South Korea, Turkey, Ukraine and the United States.Another autism sufferer, Wang Weija Vega from Taiwan, took silver.Chen Wei-chi, head of the Taiwan team, said Lee and Wang deserved to win for their natural talent, excellent performing skills and determination to overcome the challenges they face in life.
