400-plus foreign dignitaries to attend National Day festivities

Taipei, Oct. 9 (CNA) A total of 416 foreign dignitaries, including President Mario Abdo Benitez of Paraguay, will take part in Wednesday's festivities to celebrate the Republic of China's 107th anniversary, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said Tuesday.Along with Abdo Benitez, Sir Tapley Seaton, the governor-general of the Caribbean nation of St. Kitts and Nevis, and Allen Michael Chastanet, the prime minister of Saint Lucia, are among the invited guests, MOFA spokesman Andrew Lee said.Long-time supporter of Taiwan, Heritage Foundation founder Edwin J. Feulner of the United States, will also participate in the series of events.As in past years, the Japanese delegation will be the largest national contingent taking part in the Double Ten Day celebrations, which mark the beginning of the Wuchang Uprising on October 10, 1911 that resulted in the collapse of the Qing Dynasty and the founding of the Republic of China (ROC), which is now centered on Taiwan.The 200-plus-member delegation, including lawmakers and pro-Taiwan civil groups, will be led by Keiji Furuya and Seishiro Eto, two members of the House of Representatives in the Diet.Dirk Toepffer, head of the Christian Democrats (CDU) of Germany, and Scottish Parliament members Rhoda Grant and Alison Harris are also among the guests, Lee said.A total of 416 dignitaries from 56 delegations around the globe will be taking part in the festivities, higher than the 303 who took part last year, Lee said.
