Japan Prime Minister Abe meets with Taiwan's APEC envoy in Vietnam

Tokyo, Nov. 12 (CNA) Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe met Sunday with James Soong, Taiwan's special envoy to the 2017 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, on the sidelines of the two-day meeting in Da Nang, Vietnam.During the 30-minute meeting between Abe and Soong, the Japanese leader said his country and Taiwan share common values, close economic ties and people-to-people interactions, according to a press release from Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.Abe also said Japan will work to deepen the cooperation and exchanges with Taiwan on the basis of informal but substantive relations, according to the press release.It said the two men agreed that progress had been made on bilateral exchanges and cooperation over the past year and that the two countries must continue to deepen their substantial links in a wide range of areas.When Soong raised the issue of the latest developments in relations between Taiwan and China, Abe suggested that such matters be addressed peacefully through direct dialogue, the Japanese foreign ministry said.Abe also said he was committed to helping to maintain regional peace and stability, the ministry said.
